USPS Celebrates Boutonnières and Corsagesby Carol Caggiano on April 4, 2017 at 12:08 pm
In my career, I have designed flowers for many different occasions large and small, happy and sad. I’ve created flowers to say “I’m sorry,” “I love you” and sometimes just “Wow.” I approached holidays, weddings, birthdays and funerals, creating an appropriate design for each one, thousands and thousands of them over the years. Recently, I had the opportunity to create a floral design for something I had never done before — a U.S. postage stamp.
The plan was to show a coordinating boutonnière and corsage with a natural look featuring soft colors and textures for a wedding on a pair of stamps. As the project developed, the theme broadened to “Celebration” to encompass all occasions for wearing flowers. A wedding, of course, is one such occasion, however there are many more: birthdays, anniversaries, proms, showers, retirements, graduations, promotions and honorary events, just to name a few.
Peach ranuculus and hypericum berry are the main flowers featured. Seeded Eucalyptus, Astrantia and Berzelia add texture and interest. The boutonnière has a petite succulent added giving it a modern touch. The colors are soft and touches of burlap ribbon finish the natural look.
These new stamps will be perfect to use when mailing invitations and thank-you letters for all types of celebrations. I can’t wait until the stamps are available. I keep an eye on my local post office waiting for them to arrive. I think I am going to buy hundreds of them.
Next time you’re hosting a celebration or going to a special event, consider wearing flowers. Corsages and boutonnières are extra touches to make special events even more memorable. Your local professional florist can even design the flowers to match your personality, clothing, favorite colors, or the event.
What was the last celebration when you wore flowers?
