Top Three Interior Decorating Trends for 2012by Kelli Ellis on January 19, 2012 at 10:42 am
With every new year, there is a broad spectrum of exciting new trends. For 2012, I am seeing a subtle underlying shift to the basics, and emerging products will help you add “wow factor.” The real good news is most of the trends are cost-conscious and budget friendly. Here are three top trends for this year:
Seemingly simple neutrals become exceptional when you think “relief.” Add dimension instead of color to freshen your room’s decor. I cannot get enough of tile. Seemingly solid, glass tiles add a subtle shine and shimmer to any room. Dimensional wallpaper and tiles add an unbeatable focal point. On a smaller but just as mighty scale, wall vases allow you to decorate with nature’s most beautiful art – flowers from your local florist.
Upholstered furniture is fighting back from beige. There is a slow trend toward bright, colorful and bold patterned sofas and chairs. Watch your favorite store windows closely; you’ll see it happening right before your eyes. Not grandma’s floral fabrics though; think rich velvets, silks and chintz. On a budget, choose your favorite accent chair and have it reupholstered. Enhance your favorite new accent color with gorgeous flowers throughout the room.
One of the quickest ways to add a new scheme and focal point to any room is to change the lighting. When I change my clients’ lighting, I almost always increase the size — think bigger for a big impact. The trend is to blend styles to make the change easily. Iron and crystal combinations, drum pendants and blown glass blends, colored crystal and organic shapes will all add “wow” instantly.
