Want a dramatic backdrop at your wedding? Want it to look like magic? Suspend the décor! Whether you are simply suspending lanterns over a table or suspending shelves loaded with lanterns, candles, and flowers, the effect is lovely.

Check out this suspended mandap. A 10’x10′ cedar frame was suspended 9′ above the stage using two-inch rope. Then 160 nine-foot marigold garlands were hung three inches apart all the way around it to create this beautiful ceremonial structure. Suspending this type of decor is best left to professionals who have experience doing so.

Here is an example of a suspended shelf for a wedding at a local farmers market. While it looks simple, the last thing you want is to have someone with no prior experience do this and have the mechanics of the design fail during your wedding reception. Trust the professionals!

Other types of suspended decor we are seeing are paper lanterns, balloons, pennants, fabric and other lighter weight items.

Before anything is hung, make sure it is approved by the venue. This is especially true for lighted candles. Insurance riders and other procedures will probably be required before permission to hang decor is granted.

While it doesn’t require Houdini or David Copperfield to create a magical display, talk to your local professional florist about exciting ideas for your wedding. You’ll be amazed at their creativity. Then relax, and know that your guests will be inspired by the ambiance and you can enjoy all the compliments without any hang-ups. (Pun intended!)
