Bohemian Centerpiece — Leanne and David Kesler, Floral Design Institute, Inc., in Portland, OregonIt’s time to take the party outside! The garden is blooming, the patio is warm and the sky is blue.

Nothing is easier than outdoor entertaining. Fire up the barbecue, fill a bucket with ice to keep the drinks cold and set the table for a casual feast. Freshly cut flowers from the garden casually dropped into a vase look fabulous in the evening light. At dusk, the candles come out to extend the evening just a little longer.

Entertaining at home is one of my favorite parts of the summer season. Stop by my house most any day of the week from June to September and you’ll find me relaxing with friends in the back yard.  Oh, what a wonderful fantasy.

Truth is, I live in a city condo. The balcony is postage stamp sized. And the garden? Well, there isn’t one! June to September, the longer sunshine days can be a little too hot. Sitting outside with the mosquitoes (not my best friends) and sharing my dinner with little critters is not my idea of fun.  This urban woman loves the comfort of home and air conditioning.

My summertime entertaining stays indoors. Friends gathered around the table playing Scrabble or Heads Up! and enjoying the outdoor beauty through the window.

Without a garden, I rely on the flower farmers to provide the beauty. There are so many beautiful varieties in season. It’s hard to choose a favorite. Each week, a different arrangement enhances my table. Cool Greens and purples alternate with sizzling hot reds and oranges. One week I’ll choose orchids and callas for a sophisticated, tropical vibe. The next, casual local grown treasures for a “gathered from my garden” look. Of course, candles add a little ambiance in doors as well!

Hot temperatures, long summer days, flowers and air-conditioning … what could be better?
