Celebrate Her

by Jennifer Sparks on February 28, 2017 at 11:52 am

International Women’s Day, annually March 8, is held in celebration of women’s achievements today and throughout history. What do we do to celebrate Women’s Day and how do we best show the women in our lives that we respect, honor, or appreciate them?

Try this: Pick a woman you admire — a mom, sister, aunt, grandmother, friend, teacher, co-worker, mentor, or even a stranger — and let her know what she means to you. It can be as simple as a handwritten note or a random act of kindness. (And remember to be kind to yourself, as well.)

Watch here to see how a simple, unexpected gesture of compassion can turn a person’s day around:

What a year! We had a blast showing the country how good it feels to give and receive flowers through “Petal It Forward.” We showed how flowers are a small, yet powerful gesture for recognizing achievements. We celebrated exciting wedding and event party trends, a long romantic Valentine’s Day weekend and even Super Bowl Sunday. Thank you to our contributors for sharing their expertise. And a great big thanks to YOU for reading and sharing our ideas on all things floral.

And now, please enjoy this trip down memory lane as we look back at the top Flower Factor posts of 2016:

Flowers Create Connection: In response to new data reaffirming the science behind flowers’ ability to improve moods and lessen anxiety, the Society of American Florists and florists nationwide hit the streets on October 19 in 234 cities in all 50 states to hand out tens of thousands of flower bouquets to busy commuters. This “Petal It Forward” effort was meant to not only brighten the day of those receiving the bouquets, but recipients were also given a second bouquet to share with someone who needed a lift.

WomensDay2015_2We women are so busy we rarely have the time to slow down long enough to appreciate and acknowledge the women in our lives who we admire, who inspire us and who we just plain adore. Which is why I love to celebrate days like International Women’s Day on March 8th — it gives you permission to say what your heart feels but you don’t always express.

Since 1911, International Women’s Day has been a time to shine the spotlight on women – to celebrate our achievements collectively, to honor the progress we’ve made, and to acknowledge the courage and determination of our ‘sisters’ –- mothers, daughters, friends, teachers, mentors, leaders.

Take a moment to pause and think about the women in your life who have shaped you, supported you, cheered you on, guided you, inspired you and been there for you over the years.

What would you choose to say to these women on this day?

How could you honor their contribution to your life?

And do so in a way that honors you too?

No need to stress yourself out with grand gestures. Try one these simple but mighty acts in honor of her, and yourself.

  1. Admire Her Feminine Power with Flower Power. Rutgers University did a study on the power of flowers, and found that having flowers around has a long-term positive effect on our moods — flowers make us feel less depressed and agitated and give us a higher sense of enjoyment and life satisfaction. Since most women are overwhelmed, sending flowers to remind your special sister of her power and beauty is an easy act to take. Plus the flowers will keep reminding her of her feminine power even after March 8! Include some words about the flowers you choose and how they reflect what you admire in her. Did you know that different flowers have different meanings? Click here for a list.
