Open Up

by Christine Arylo on August 11, 2014 at 8:58 am

SAF_LLAF_OpenUp_404X404As a person who has dedicated her life to teaching people how to love well, I can say that most people I meet admit to me they would love to have more loving relationships, in which they feel loved – appreciated, cared for, and seen. Just like a flower needs water and sun to flourish, we humans need to give and receive love in order to truly thrive. The challenge is that unlike flowers, who naturally open themselves up to receive the sun and water on a daily basis, we humans default to keeping our hearts protected, so the love we seek has a hard time getting in. While we desire love, most of us are too scared of the vulnerability that opening our hearts requires.

Wow, can we learn a lot from a flower! Those smart buds don’t think twice about letting the sun and water in, they just open up and receive what they need to be nourished. What would it be like for you to open up your heart more, so that when love does show up, you could receive the love you seek instead of pushing it away or only letting a little in?

Build your love receptor muscles little by little, starting with sources of love that are guaranteed safe. For example, start interacting with things that are naturally loving. Did you ever notice how when you are around babies, puppies or flowers, that your heart opens up almost automatically, and love just comes pouring in? This is because these things have no fear factor. You feel safe opening your heart.  Read More

Fantastic Florals

by Tim Farrell on July 9, 2014 at 4:24 pm

Flowers come in all shapes, sizes and colors, and as a floral designer it is great fun to create new and different looks and styles. There is truly something for everyone. This spring, I had the pleasure of participating in the Society of American Florists’ media workshop, where we educated national magazine editors on trends in floral design. For the workshop, I created the following eight floral pieces, depicting trends inspired by my esteemed floral industry colleagues, Bill Schaffer, AIFD, Kristine Kratt, AIFD, and Rich Salvaggio, AIFD.

Green and brown hues dominate in forest-like elements with accents of purples to create an eco-friendly look.

Mosses, barks, herbals and natural elements combine with shades of purple.

Pollinate

by Jayme Barrett on July 5, 2014 at 5:44 am

SAF_LLAF_Pollinate_404X404Positive energy is positively contagious. Throughout my book Feng Shui Your Life and with each and every client, I offer practical techniques for bringing positive energy into their hearts, homes and lives. When you share this positive energy and happiness with others, you can uplift their lives in countless ways. As an added benefit, you’ll receive loads of it in return! Below are my simple tips to “live like a flower” and pollinate by transmitting your optimism, kindness and love to change a person’s day or quite possibly their life.

Radiate joy & happiness. Start every day in a good mood, and let your happiness uplift others. Make someone laugh with a funny joke, or share a hilarious memory on Facebook. Smile. Wear clothing with a positive message. If you need a jump start in the morning, think flowers. Research from Harvard shows looking at flowers first thing in the morning makes you feel less anxious, more compassionate and more energetic throughout the day.

Celebrate & acknowledge people. Make an effort to praise and compliment friends, family and co-workers. When you celebrate someone’s accomplishment or efforts, large or small, it can make their day and give them confidence to continue on. Taking special notice of unique qualities, hard work and time spent is a gift and a blessing. Marking those special times with flowers will keep you in their memories forever.  Read More

Soak Up the Sun

by MJ Ryan on June 1, 2014 at 7:14 pm

SAF_LLAF_SoakSun_404X404Ever notice on bright and sunny days how everyone seems happy? Just like flowers need light, people need happy thoughts and moments to grow. As a personal change expert, I know how easy it is to live like a flower and embrace the sunny side of life. Here are a few simple tips that will really lift your mood:

Uplift with orange. Color therapists say colors really do affect our moods. The happiest color? Orange. It promotes optimism, enthusiasm, and a sense of uplift. Choose orange flowers—roses, gerberas, lilies, ranunculus, alstroemeria, tulips—to put on your desk and see your mood soar.

Tune into happy tunes. Music is a very powerful happiness creator. Choose songs that make you feel good, whether that’s through inspiring lyrics or the rhythm. Want to boost your mood even more? Singing has been shown to be a great way to lift your spirits, lower blood pressure, and decrease depression. Get your family or roommates involved in the fun. If you’re self-conscious, sing in the car when you’re alone. Read More

Over the last two weeks, flower enthusiasts, bloggers, and florists have reviewed the entries and cast their votes in the Society of American Florists’ VaseOff! All-Stars Challenge. For the grand finale in our series of online floral design competitions, we had the five winning florists from previous VaseOff! Challenges go head-to-head and compete for the ultimate title: VaseOff! All-Stars Champion! Each contestant was tasked with creating an arrangement that inspires a friend to live life to the fullest, depicting the notion, “Live Colorfully – Dare to be Different.”

Which design inspired you most? Outta the Box by Bryan Swann. Congratulations to Bryan, the VaseOff! All-Stars Champion!

OUTTA THE BOX By Bryan Swann

“A dear friend taught me one of the best life lessons, which is to live every day to the fullest. Embrace life,” Swann said describing his floral arrangement. “As floral artists, we are able to convey that lesson through the beauty of flowers. I have always loved the inherent energy that is found in the colors of hot pink, purple and coral. I started my design by creating a box with the liatris and then wove the other elements throughout this forest of liatris to bring the design Outta the Box!”

All of the entries showcased the theme Live Colorfully – Dare to be Different, and we thank our other contestants for sharing their talents with us: Walter Fedyshyn and Art Pop, Rowena Johnson and Color Your World, Tony Medlock and Flowing River, and Coby Neal and A Case for Life.

The five VaseOff! Challenge entries represent the artistry, expertise, quality and customization that you get from working with a professional florist. A floral gift can inspire and empower, and is a great way to congratulate a graduate, celebrate a friend’s new job or promotion, or simply say “thinking of you” to make someone’s day special.
