1-flowersshelfWe don’t need a Harvard study telling us flowers make people happy to know flowers make people happy. It’s simple math, really: bouquet of flowers + people = happy!

My kids played a bit of hooky last week. It’s OK. They were with me. Together, we got to experience something wonderful. We headed to Seattle Children’s Hospital. Ballard Blossom was there with over 150 flower arrangements donated by the Society of American Florists, as part of the Mother’s Day VaseOff! Challenge. The kids and I joined the hospital volunteers delivering flowers to different locations throughout the hospital.

2-RickVelmaWe raced around the hospital with two hospital volunteers, Rick and Velma. We were able to join them as the bouquets were placed all over Seattle Children’s to help brighten spaces, and faces! I was told Rick has been a volunteer at Children’s for over 20 years. It was clear he knew exactly where he was taking us AND the flowers!

But if you DO need some scientific research to convince you, then get ready to believe. Here are my favorite findings from recent flower research.

1) Rutgers University found flowers have an immediate impact on happiness. All study participants expressed “true” or “excited” smiles upon receiving flowers, demonstrating extraordinary delight and gratitude. This reaction was universal, occurring in all age groups. Read More
