Taking Care of Valentine’s Day Flowersby Lisa Greene on February 16, 2014 at 3:28 pm
Almost every girl loves getting beautiful flowers. Research has shown people smile every time they are given a flower bouquet. Since receiving flowers is such a delightful treat, here are a few tips on keeping them fresher longer.
Most floral arrangements last four to seven days or longer, depending on the flowers used and the care they receive. If you receive flowers delivered in a vase, check the water to be sure it is clean and clear. If it’s not, then remove the flowers (all at once in a bunch if you can) carefully set the flowers aside. Dump the water out of the vase and rinse. Wash with soap and water if needed.
Once the vase is clean, fill it with water and add preservative solution (mix according to the package directions). Remove about an inch from the stems with a sharp knife or clippers then place in the vase of clean preservative. Keep any extra preservative solution in case the water level drops between changes. Repeat as necessary removing any spent flowers as you go.
If the flowers are in a bunch or box, the treatment is a little different. Start by removing the packaging and then cut the bottom of the stems. Place the flowers in a clean container with fresh water and flower preservative. The next steps are the same as above. Replace with fresh water and flower preservative as needed (every two to three days).
Keep your flowers away from direct sunlight, away from cold drafts or heat from vents or appliances. Click here for more Flower & Plant Care Tips.
While the flowers won’t last forever, the memories of receiving them will. That is the true gift and power of flowers!
